Philadelphia man is accused of killing his wife and mother-in-law

Leandro Barberena was arrested in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, accused of fatally stabbing his wife and mother-in-law in their family home.

The most disturbing detail of the crime allegedly perpetrated by the 43-year-old is that he himself called the police.

However, he did not call to confess — he just said he found the bodies.

Now, he has been charged with the murder of his 58-year-old wife, Alma Barberena, and his 75-year-old mother-in-law, Angela Trejo.

Why did Leandro Barberena stab his wife?

The brutal crime committed by Leandro Barberena was classified by the authorities as a case of domestic violence.

Detectives from the Homicide Unit of the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) arrested him.

Alma Barberena had informed other family members that she would visit her mother, Angela Trejo, at her home at 6000 Bingham Street.

Alma was going to help her mother with a telehealth appointment.

Paramedics were unable to save the women

At 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the PPD emergency number received a call from Leandro Barberena.

The legal documents detail that he said he found the two women covered in blood.

Several officers and paramedics from the Philadelphia Fire Department (PFD) responded to the scene.

However, when the PFD paramedics checked Alma Barberena and Angela Trejo, they pronounced them dead.

A construction glove is a key piece of evidence

The Homicide Unit of the PPD then took over the investigation and interviewed Barberena about the brutal murder.

He said that he did not know what had happened, only that when he arrived at the house, he found Alma Barberena and Angela Trejo.

According to detectives, the two women were in the basement, covered in blood with multiple knife wounds.

A blood-covered glove was also found at the crime scene, and that was one of the key pieces of evidence implicating Leandro Barberena.

Leandro Barberena had several wounds on his arms

The glove had samples of Leandro Barberena’s DNA as well as some of his blood.

An officer obtained a search warrant for Barberena’s car, where they found the other pair similar to the glove found at the house.

Moreover, detectives noted that Barberena also had some injuries on his arms, which he claimed he got while moving some bricks.

According to a forensic doctor, the injuries were made by one of the two victims with her nails while defending herself from the brutal attack.

Barbarena is currently in jail
